Be Set Free

Be Set Free

Reading Time Under 5 min & I'm ESL :P

I was listening to one of Kanye's new songs Selah where he mentioned John 8:33 "We are Abraham's descendants.. they answered him, "and we have never been enslaved to anyone. How can you say, 'You will become free'?""along with John 8:36 "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."

Whole Verse --- John 8:33-36
31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed

To be a slave is to be bound to a master or owner, until, if ever, be let free.

When you are a slave it doesn't just imply physical it can also be "mental' slavery; sin. Sin means to fall short of God's glory, simply put that is. Can you think of some ways you have fallen short or are still a "slave" to? Alcohol, drugs, sex, loneliness, victim mentality, anger, even "religion" which basically means repeating rituals, among other things. It's okay because that's what the Son came to do; free us in the spirit, so we can live peacefully in union with our Creator which has no sin.

Let's take Fear for example---

But first;

We can call sin "darkness" self-explanatory right? and following Jesus 'light".

God sees light as good!
Genesis 1:1 In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth.2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

God is light; in Him, there is no darkness at all. 1 John 1:5

Okay carry on;

My 11 year old naturally has been questioning his belief if there's even a God. Yet, he is sometimes scared to go upstairs in our home alone at night, it's a battle especially when I want him to take a shower and I need to stay downstairs to clean up after dinner (so he calls on his younger brother to go with him..). Where does that fear come from I asked? "I don't know" he replied. Which made me think this is just in our nature because I don't teach him to fear (side note, I've jumped off a cliff into a river in Sedona *proud face) and surely scary movies aren't allowed in our home. Don't get me wrong I have been scared of the imaginary as well.... but Jesus.... is all I have to say.

Fear in the bible is mentioned more than a handful of times with different meanings.

Example A; "Fear God" can be described as respect God. When you fear something you make it bigger than you are, you give it power. So I fear the Lord aka put some respeck on his name. *Laughs loudly

Psalm 115:13 He will bless those who fear the LORD, both the important and the insignificant together.

Example B; Do not be afraid. God calls us not to be afraid, to put our faith in Him as he protects us, goes ahead of us.

So, where does fear come from?
To put it simply; lack of faith and trust. From research, we can revert back to the very beginning of the Bible in Genesis when Adam and Eve hid from God when He called on them because they were afraid due to their naked bodies. Go back some more and the story begins at the Tree of the Garden where they partook in disobedience when the devil enticed them. Where sin aka falling short began. Unfortunately, it has been passed down to us, just like the mole on your back from your great-grandpa.

Thanks, Adam & Eve! Couldn't you just listen to God? & I oop. Isn't this man's nature? What are some things you have done to disobey your parents or guardian?

As one example of sin, again, where we fall short. Fear is in our nature, like taking your boyfriends' fries when you didn't order any *side-eyes.

So I leave you with this; to no longer be a slave to sin we must first be freed from the bondage of that master (whatever it may be for you) and for that, we need a leader, the light, which is found in Jesus our Savior who sets the captives free.

The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is upon me, for the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed. Isaiah 61:1

"Our spirits are reborn instantly the moment we call upon Jesus to be our Lord and Savior."
-Ministering Deliverance

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."  2 Corinthians 5:17

This doesn't make us perfect, it means we know better so we do better. & for that, we must study the word of God. He just gave me this...You can't make dirty clothes clean without soap, as you can't renew your mind without the sweet word of God.

I keep adding to this so byeeeee Felicia.......for now ;)
